The standard 50 Hz configuration supplies 230V AC power at approximately 15 amps, using a single-phase, two-wire arrangement with a power factor of 1.0. The MCGB-512 is manufactured specifically for 50 Hz operation and is not field-convertible to 60 Hz.
Its 3.5 kW capacity may support a compatible marine air-conditioning unit, battery charger, refrigerator, water heater, lighting, entertainment equipment, freshwater pumps, electrical outlets, and other moderate onboard loads, subject to a proper electrical-load assessment.
Customers looking for the Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 for sale should confirm the vessel’s voltage and frequency, expected electrical demand, machinery-space dimensions, raw-water supply, exhaust arrangement, fuel-system compatibility, control-panel requirements, and installation accessories before ordering.
Purpose-Built Westerbeke Marine Generator Engineering
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB generator range is developed specifically for onboard marine power generation. Unlike portable household generators or general-purpose industrial units adapted for vessel use, the MCGB integrates marine cooling, water-injected exhaust compatibility, gasoline ignition protection, electronic fuel management, automatic safety systems, vibration isolation, and vessel-compatible controls.
The generator is engineered for operating conditions that may include:
- Continuous vessel vibration
- High machinery-space humidity
- Salt-laden marine air
- Restricted installation space
- Changing electrical demand
- Elevated engine-room temperatures
- Vessel movement and inclination
- Extended operation away from shore power
Westerbeke identifies the 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 as its most compact and lightweight 3.5 kW multiport EFI marine generator. The unit weighs approximately 226 lb. or 102 kg and is intended for smaller vessels requiring useful AC power without installing a substantially larger generator package.
The generator meets applicable United States Coast Guard requirements, CARB and United States EPA requirements, and is identified by Westerbeke as CE-certified.
Customers comparing the Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB price should consider more than its 3.5 kW rating. Compact size, low weight, multiport EFI, electronic governing, reduced-emission design, freshwater cooling, safety monitoring, diagnostic capability, and worldwide parts and service support all contribute to the generator’s overall value.
Smooth Two-Cylinder Gasoline Engine Performance
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 uses a naturally aspirated, two-cylinder, four-cycle gasoline engine with a horizontal inline configuration.
Its published engine characteristics include:
- Two cylinders in a horizontal inline arrangement
- Four-cycle gasoline operation
- Naturally aspirated air intake
- Approximately 20.3 cubic inches or 0.33 litres of displacement
- 2.40-inch bore
- 2.24-inch stroke
- 10.2:1 compression ratio
- Semi-spherical combustion chambers
- Electronic engine governing
- 2500 RPM rated engine speed
- Approximately 6 horsepower at rated speed
- Aluminium cylinder head and block
- Forged crankshaft supported by two main bearings
- Overhead valves
These specifications are published in Westerbeke’s official March 2024 advanced specification sheet for the 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 platform.
The two-cylinder configuration, precise electronic throttle control, and specially designed flywheel help provide smoother operation than many compact single-cylinder generator platforms. Westerbeke also highlights the generator’s 2500 RPM engine speed as lower than the 3000 or 3600 RPM commonly associated with many small gasoline generators.
Lower-speed two-cylinder operation may contribute to:
- Reduced vibration
- Smoother power delivery
- Lower mechanical operating frequency
- Improved onboard comfort
- Reduced noise
- Better suitability for overnight and cruising use
- Dependable operation under moderate electrical loads
The generator is rated for a maximum continuous operating inclination of approximately 20 degrees in all directions, although the installation must still provide dependable lubrication, fuel delivery, cooling-water flow, ventilation, and exhaust drainage.
A properly sized marine gasoline generator allows boat owners to operate essential AC systems while underway or at anchor without relying continuously on marina shore power.
3.5 kW Single-Phase Electrical Output
The standard Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 configuration provides the following electrical ratings:
| Electrical Specification | Rating |
|---|---|
| Rated Electrical Output | 3.5 kW |
| Voltage | 230V |
| Frequency | 50 Hz |
| Electrical Configuration | Single Phase |
| Number of Wires | Two |
| Power Factor | 1.0 |
| Rated Current | 15 Amps |
| Engine Operating Speed | 2500 RPM |
| Starting Method | Remote Electric Start |
| Alternator Type | Brushless, Two Pole |
Westerbeke also manufactures the MCGB-612 configuration for 120V, 60 Hz operation. However, the official specification clearly states that the 50 Hz and 60 Hz versions are not field-convertible between frequencies. Customers must therefore select the correct model for the vessel’s electrical system when ordering.
The vessel’s continuous electrical demand should remain within the generator’s rated capacity while preserving sufficient reserve for temporary startup loads.
Electrical systems that may require additional starting current include:
- Marine air-conditioning compressors
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Freshwater pumps
- Water heaters
- Battery chargers
- Compact water makers
- Ventilation fans
- Small galley appliances
An undersized generator may experience:
- Voltage reduction
- Frequency instability
- Difficulty starting compressors
- Circuit-breaker operation
- Excessive engine loading
- Protective shutdown
- Reduced generator service life
A professional marine electrical load assessment should consider normal running demand, compressor and motor startup current, simultaneous equipment use, battery-charger consumption, and a practical operating reserve.
A 3.5 kW generator should not automatically be expected to operate every appliance aboard the vessel simultaneously. Load management may be required, particularly when starting an air conditioner, water heater, charger, or other high-demand system.
Multiport Electronic Fuel Injection
One of the principal features of the Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 is its sequential multiport electronic fuel-injection system.
Multiport EFI supplies fuel through electronically controlled injectors rather than a traditional marine carburettor. Westerbeke states that the system provides improved fuel efficiency, easier starting, increased reliability, reduced emissions, and advanced diagnostic capability.
The EFI system works with the generator’s electronic control unit, engine sensors, fuel pumps, ignition system, and electronic governor.
Potential benefits include:
- Easier cold and warm starting
- Precise fuel delivery
- Improved response to electrical-load changes
- Reduced emissions
- Better high-temperature operation
- Electronic fault monitoring
- Reduced carburettor-related maintenance
- More consistent engine performance
Fuel quality remains important. Water contamination, deteriorated gasoline, blocked filters, deposits, damaged fuel hoses, or unsuitable long-term fuel storage can cause difficult starting, unstable operation, injector problems, or fuel-system damage.
The vessel should use an approved marine gasoline water-separating filter between the fuel tank and generator. Westerbeke’s operator manual notes that gasoline-filter assemblies should comply with applicable United States Coast Guard requirements and typically use metal rather than transparent bowls.
Water-Cooled Returnless Fuel System
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB uses a water-cooled returnless gasoline fuel system designed to improve operation in elevated machinery-space temperatures.
The returnless arrangement helps prevent vapour lock by controlling fuel temperature before gasoline reaches the electronic injectors. Vapour lock can occur when fuel becomes excessively hot and forms vapour within the fuel-delivery system, interrupting normal engine operation.
Westerbeke identifies improved high-ambient-temperature performance as one of the main benefits of the water-cooled returnless design.
Published fuel-system features include:
- Sequential multiport EFI
- Electric fuel-transfer pump
- Water-cooled fuel module
- Returnless fuel arrangement
- Electronic ignition and fuel control
- Minimum 1/4-inch fuel-supply piping
- Advanced diagnostic capability
Fuel hoses, shutoff valves, filters, electrical components, and ventilation must comply with applicable marine gasoline-installation standards.
Electronic Governing for Stable Frequency
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 uses an electronic engine governor to maintain consistent engine speed as connected electrical demand changes.
When an air-conditioning compressor, pump, charger, refrigerator, or water heater is connected, the engine experiences an immediate increase in mechanical load. The governor responds by adjusting engine throttle and fuel delivery to maintain the rated operating speed.
Electronic governing helps reduce the engine-speed drop commonly described as “bogging down” and supports more stable frequency when electrical load is applied. Westerbeke lists frequency regulation of approximately 0.7 Hz, or 1%, from no load to full load.
This can improve the operation of:
- Marine air-conditioning systems
- Refrigeration equipment
- Battery chargers
- Freshwater pumps
- Electric motors
- Lighting systems
- Entertainment equipment
- Sensitive onboard electronics
Stable generator performance still depends on correct electrical wiring, grounding, output-cable sizing, ventilation, circuit protection, and sensible load management.
Brushless Two-Pole Marine Alternator
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 uses a brushless two-pole marine alternator designed for compact and dependable onboard electricity generation.
Its published alternator features include:
- Brushless construction
- Two-pole design
- Capacitor voltage regulation
- Class H insulation
- Approximately ±5% voltage regulation
- Approximately 0.7 Hz frequency regulation
- Direct-connected moulded centrifugal cooling blower
- Marine electromagnetic-interference control
The 50 Hz alternator configuration supplies 3.5 kW at 230V and 15 amps, using a single-phase, two-wire electrical arrangement with a power factor of 1.0.
Brushless construction reduces maintenance associated with carbon brushes, while Class H insulation provides protection for the alternator windings in demanding machinery-space temperatures.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced brush-related maintenance
- Compact generator dimensions
- Stable onboard electrical output
- Protected alternator windings
- Practical long-term serviceability
- Compatibility with properly installed marine electrical systems
Westerbeke states that the generator’s electromagnetic-interference performance exceeds the requirements of most marine radio telephones and standard television equipment.
Electrical performance depends on the complete vessel installation, including output-cable sizing, circuit breakers, neutral and grounding arrangements, transfer switching, ventilation, and load distribution.
Freshwater Cooling with Marine Heat Exchanger
The 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 uses a freshwater cooling system with a marine heat exchanger.
Internal coolant circulates through the engine, while raw water removes heat through the heat-exchanger circuit. The raw water is then discharged through the generator’s water-injected exhaust system.
The cooling arrangement includes:
- Closed freshwater coolant circuit
- Marine heat exchanger
- Coolant-recovery tank
- Belt-driven freshwater pump
- Belt-driven raw-water pump
- Raw-water-cooled exhaust manifold
- Water-injected exhaust elbow
- Thermostatic temperature control
The published cooling-system capacity is approximately 1.46 US quarts or 1.38 litres. The operator manual lists raw-water flow at approximately 3.4 US gallons or 12.9 litres per minute at 2500 RPM, measured before discharge into the exhaust elbow.
| Cooling and Exhaust Connection | Specification |
|---|---|
| Raw-Water Connection | 0.50 in. OD |
| Exhaust-Elbow Connection | 2.0 in. OD |
| Cooling-System Capacity | 1.46 qt. / 1.38 L |
| Approximate Operating Temperature | 170–190°F / 77–88°C |
| Approximate Raw-Water Flow | 3.4 GPM / 12.9 LPM |
Routine maintenance should include inspection of:
- Coolant level and condition
- Raw-water intake and seacock
- Seawater strainer
- Raw-water pump impeller
- Freshwater circulation pump
- Drive belts
- Heat exchanger
- Cooling hoses and clamps
- Exhaust mixing elbow
- Waterlift muffler
- Wet-exhaust hose
- Siphon-break arrangement
Restricted raw-water flow, a blocked strainer, worn pump impeller, damaged belt, fouled heat exchanger, restricted exhaust elbow, or insufficient machinery-space ventilation may cause overheating.
Low-CO Marine Generator Technology
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5 is part of the manufacturer’s low-carbon-monoxide multiport EFI gasoline-generator range.
Westerbeke explains that its multiport EFI generators are designed to reduce normal carbon-monoxide levels by precisely controlling the engine’s air-to-fuel ratio and treating exhaust through a specialised catalyst.
Low-CO does not mean CO-free.
Carbon monoxide is colourless, tasteless, odourless, and potentially fatal. Even a generator that normally produces reduced CO levels can create a dangerous situation if untreated exhaust enters an engine compartment, cabin, cockpit, enclosed canvas area, or space beneath a swim platform.
A correctly installed gasoline-generator system should include:
- Operational carbon-monoxide detectors in occupied areas
- Properly designed wet-exhaust routing
- Adequate machinery-space ventilation
- Secure exhaust hoses and clamps
- A correctly sized waterlift muffler
- Appropriate exhaust-outlet positioning
- Regular catalyst inspection
- Periodic exhaust-system inspection
- Immediate investigation of every CO alarm
Westerbeke’s operator manual states that the generator should not be operated unless the vessel has a functioning marine carbon-monoxide detector. It also warns against swimming or remaining near the exhaust outlet while the generator is running.
The manual advises inspection and replacement of the catalyst when necessary every 500 operating hours. It also calls for verification of satisfactory CO levels seasonally or every 250 operating hours, whichever occurs first, using an appropriate CO analyser.
Correct exhaust-system design is essential because water intrusion can damage the catalyst and compromise generator operation.
Fuel Consumption
Westerbeke publishes the following approximate fuel-consumption figures for the 3.5 MCGB:
| Generator Load | Approximate Fuel Consumption |
|---|---|
| 100% Load | 0.58 US gal/hr / 2.2 L/hr |
| 75% Load | 0.56 US gal/hr / 2.1 L/hr |
| 50% Load | 0.47 US gal/hr / 1.8 L/hr |
| 25% Load | 0.36 US gal/hr / 1.4 L/hr |
Actual fuel consumption may vary according to electrical demand, fuel quality, engine condition, maintenance, machinery-space temperature, installation, and operating environment.
Remote Starting and Automatic Safety Shutdowns
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB-512 includes a simple one-touch start-and-stop control panel.
The rocker-switch control eliminates the need for separate start, stop, and fuel-priming switches. The standard panel also includes a running-hour meter and warning-annunciation light strip.
An optional remote start-and-stop panel can be installed using a compatible extension harness connected to the side of the generator’s control box.
Automatic protection systems are designed to warn the operator or stop the generator when potentially damaging conditions are detected.
Published warning and shutdown functions include:
- Engine overspeed
- Engine underspeed
- Low engine-oil pressure
- High exhaust temperature
- High engine-coolant temperature
- Additional electronic-control faults
Other standard electrical and control features include:
- 12V electric starting motor
- 0.6 kW starter
- 5-amp flywheel battery charger
- AC output circuit breaker
- 12V negative-ground electrical system
- Electronic ignition and fuel control
- Running-hour meter
- Warning-annunciation panel
Westerbeke lists a cranking requirement of approximately 70 amps at 70°F. Final battery selection should also consider cable length, voltage drop, ambient temperature, and applicable marine electrical standards.
Automatic shutdown protection helps reduce the risk of serious generator damage but does not replace regular inspection. Engine oil, coolant, raw-water flow, fuel supply, exhaust components, electrical connections, and ventilation should be checked routinely.
Quiet 2500 RPM Operation
Noise and vibration are important considerations aboard smaller boats where the generator may be installed close to cabins, seating areas, or overnight accommodation.
The Westerbeke 3.5 MCGB combines:
- Smooth two-cylinder operation
- Electronically controlled 2500 RPM engine speed
- Precise throttle control
- Specially designed flywheel
- Flexible vibration isolators
- Water-cooled exhaust manifold
- Water-injected marine exhaust
- Compact installation footprint
Westerbeke describes the generator as exceptionally smooth and quiet, highlighting its two-cylinder engine and electronically controlled 2500 RPM operation.
A properly installed quiet marine gasoline generator should also include:
- Correctly sized waterlift muffler
- Proper wet-exhaust routing
- Suitable machinery-space insulation
- Flexible fuel and cooling connections
- Correct vibration-isolator positioning
- Properly supported hoses and cables
- Adequate compartment ventilation
- Sufficient maintenance clearance
Final onboard sound levels depend on the complete installation rather than the generator alone. Hull construction, mounting strength, machinery-space insulation, exhaust routing, ventilation openings, and structural vibration transfer all influence the result. 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5
Optional Drip Shield and Acoustic Installation Considerations
Westerbeke lists an optional drip shield and drip tray for the 3.5 MCGB but does not identify a dedicated factory Sound Guard enclosure among the standard published options for this model.
The dimensional drawing shows an optional drip shield increasing the approximate installation envelope to:
| Drip-Shield Measurement | Approximate Specification |
|---|---|
| Length | 30.6 in. / 777 mm |
| Width | 16.4 in. / 417 mm |
| Height | 15.6 in. / 397 mm |
Any custom acoustic enclosure must preserve the generator’s ventilation, combustion-air supply, cooling performance, fuel-system safety, exhaust routing, and service access. A poorly designed enclosure may trap heat, restrict airflow, obstruct maintenance points, or create an unsafe gasoline-vapour environment.
Installation Dimensions and Weight
The approximate base-generator dimensions are:
| Measurement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Length | 27.1 in. / 688 mm |
| Width | 15.8 in. / 401 mm |
| Height | 15.0 in. / 381 mm |
| Dry Weight | 226 lb. / 102 kg |
| Maximum Operating Inclination | 20° in All Directions |
These dimensions and weight are published on Westerbeke’s current 3.5 MCGB-512 3.5product page and official advanced specification sheet.
Before installation, the vessel owner, boat builder, or marine engineer should confirm:
- Machinery-space dimensions
- Mounting-point locations
- Generator lifting and removal route
- Dry and operating weight
- Service clearances
- Machinery-space ventilation
- Ignition-protected electrical installation
- Raw-water inlet position
- Wet-exhaust routing
- Siphon-break requirements
- Fuel-supply connection
- AC output cable route
- Starting-battery cable route
- Remote-control harness route
- Carbon-monoxide detector placement
- Drip-shield clearance
When replacing an existing small marine generator, matching only the electrical output is insufficient. Voltage, frequency, phase, dimensions, weight, mounting centres, cooling, exhaust, fuel supply, ventilation, ignition protection, and control compatibility must also be evaluated.
